Jukai, or giving and taking the precepts, is the oldest of the Buddhist ceremonies. It is a significant rite of passage in the Way of practice, the transmission of living Wisdom. Participants in the jukai ceremony acknowledge their acceptance of the Three Treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha as a guide for their lives. Jukai is a commitment to manifest and live life as the Three Treasures, entering the stream of the lineage of the Buddha Way.
Participants have been preparing for their jukai ceremony all summer. Each participant has sewn a rakusu or Buddha’s robe. Rakusus have been part of the Zen tradition since the 9th century. They have studied the Zen Precepts and considered how they will incorporate the precepts into their lives. Finally participants have prepared a lineage chart, drawing the traditional Zen ancestry that traces from Shakyumuni Buddha through all of the Soto Zen teachers to themselves.
We invite you to attend the ceremony and join us in supporting the participants as they formally take up the Zen precepts.
